Not acupuncture. A completely different mechanism.
Dry needling is a western, anatomy-based technique performed by physical therapists with specialized training. A thin needle is inserted into a myofascial trigger point, a tight, hypersensitive band of muscle fiber, to provoke a local twitch response and deactivate the trigger point.
Unlike acupuncture, which is based on meridian theory, dry needling targets specific anatomical structures based on clinical examination findings. It is often the most direct way to address deep trigger points that do not respond to manual pressure or stretching.
Brief discomfort, lasting results.
Step 1: Trigger Point Assessment
Your therapist identifies active trigger points through hands-on palpation. You will feel the characteristic referral pattern, the pain that travels away from where the needle will be placed.
Step 2: Needle Placement
A thin, sterile needle is inserted into the trigger point. You may feel a brief local twitch response, a short, involuntary muscle cramp that signals the trigger point is releasing.
Step 3: Post-Treatment Exercise
After needling, the newly released tissue is put through movement to reinforce the change. This is why dry needling at Shift Therapy & Wellness always includes corrective exercise.
