A tear on the scan is not the whole picture.
The rotator cuff is a group of four muscles and tendons that hold the ball of the shoulder centered and let you lift, reach, and rotate. Tears range from small fraying to full thickness, and many people have cuff changes on imaging without significant pain or limitation.
What matters is how your shoulder moves and how strong the surrounding muscles are. With the right loading and coordination work, the rest of the cuff and the shoulder blade can take over and restore confident, pain-free function.
Cuff tears show up in everyday movements.
The clearest signs of a rotator cuff problem appear in the tasks that ask the shoulder to lift and rotate against resistance. Here is what to watch for.
Weakness Lifting the Arm
Trouble raising the arm overhead or out to the side, especially against any resistance or weight.
Night Pain
Aching that flares at night, especially when lying on the affected shoulder, that disrupts your sleep.
Pain With Overhead Reach
Discomfort reaching into a cabinet, washing your hair, or putting on a jacket overhead.
Reaching Behind the Back
Difficulty tucking in a shirt, fastening a seatbelt, or reaching a back pocket without pain.
Clicking or Catching
A catching, clicking, or grinding sensation as the arm moves through certain positions.
Loss of Confidence
A sense that the arm might give out with certain lifts, leading you to avoid using it altogether.
Build the strength the cuff is missing.
Treatment at Shift Therapy & Wellness begins by calming the irritated shoulder and restoring the motion you can comfortably control. Hands-on work and targeted tools reduce pain so we can start rebuilding strength sooner.
From there we load the rotator cuff and shoulder blade muscles progressively, retrain how the shoulder moves overhead, and guide you back to your work, sport, or hobbies. If surgery turns out to be the right call, you will be in a far stronger position going in.
No referral needed. Most insurances accepted. In most cases, you can be seen within the same week.
